Should I have a root canal or extract the tooth?

Dental

Saving the natural tooth is almost always the better long-term choice when root canal is technically feasible — natural teeth function better than any replacement, preserve bone, and avoid the costs and complications of replacement. Extraction is the right choice when: root canal isn't feasible (severe fracture, inadequate remaining tooth structure); patient preference based on cost considerations; specific complications make saving the tooth unviable. We discuss both options honestly at consultation.

Is root canal treatment painful?

Dental

Modern root canal treatment with proper anaesthesia and rotary instrumentation is significantly less painful than its reputation suggests. Most patients report it as comparable to a long filling — pressure and time in the chair, but not pain. The pain that brought patients to root canal usually resolves within 24-48 hours of the first visit. Tenderness on biting may persist 1-2 weeks as the inflammation around the tooth resolves.

Am I suitable for Spark aligners?

Dental

Spark treats similar case categories to Invisalign — mild to moderate crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, crossbite, post-orthodontic relapse. The case selection conversation considers the same factors. Where the orthodontic problem is significant enough to warrant fixed mechanics (severe rotations, complex spacing closure), neither Spark nor Invisalign may be the right answer and ceramic braces or specialist referral becomes the recommendation.

Are Spark attachments comfortable?

Dental

The attachments themselves are similar to Invisalign attachments — small composite bumps bonded to selected teeth where extra grip is needed for the aligners. Most patients adapt within days. Spark's lower-friction material may reduce the snug-fitting sensation around attachments slightly compared to Invisalign, though the difference is subtle and patient-dependent.

How long does Spark treatment take?

Dental

Similar to Invisalign — 9-18 months typical, depending on case complexity. Lite cases finish at 6-9 months. Comprehensive cases can run 14-18 months. The duration depends on the orthodontic problem rather than the aligner system; Spark and Invisalign deliver similar movement rates for most case categories.

How does Spark cost compare to Invisalign?

Dental

Spark pricing is quoted in writing after assessment, as it depends on the complexity of the case. Our Invisalign plans are Express £2,200 (one refinement), Moderate £3,400 (one refinement) and Unlimited £4,500–£4,900 (refinements as the case requires, multi-year aligner cover, T&Cs apply). We compare the two systems honestly at consultation, based on your teeth rather than on price alone.

What is TruGEN aligner material?

Dental

TruGEN is Ormco's clear aligner material used in Spark aligners. It's formulated to resist staining (particularly useful for heavy coffee, tea, red wine consumers) and provides lower friction during tooth movement, which manufacturer claims produces more predictable correction. The clinical evidence supports the staining resistance claim; the lower-friction claim is less definitively studied but plausible mechanically.

Is Spark better than Invisalign?

Dental

Different rather than better. Spark uses TruGEN material, which is more stain-resistant and has lower friction than Invisalign's SmartTrack material. The wear pattern is the same (22 hours a day, changing aligners weekly). Invisalign has substantially more clinical data behind it and a longer track record. We offer both and recommend based on case suitability and patient preference, not provider commission. Spark fees are quoted in writing after assessment.

How do you decide if Six Month Smiles fits my case?

Dental

The MSc-trained case selection asks whether the orthodontic problem is genuinely contained to the front teeth, or whether it has bite or alignment components that need broader treatment. Six Month Smiles is the right answer for some cases but not many; honest case selection often directs patients to Invisalign (similar timing, wider correction range) or to fixed braces for cases needing more change. Your orthodontic consultation is free and tells us which category your case fits. Fees are quoted in writing after assessment.

Does Six Month Smiles hurt?

Dental

Similar to ceramic braces — mild pressure for 24-48 hours after each adjustment appointment, managed with over-the-counter analgesia. Initial 1-2 weeks of adaptation as the cheeks and lips adjust to the brackets. Orthodontic wax helps significantly with any initial irritation. Most patients describe it as occasionally uncomfortable rather than painful.

How much does Six Month Smiles cost?

Dental

Six Month Smiles is quoted in writing after assessment, as the cost depends on whether one or both arches need treatment. The quote sets out appliances, adjustment appointments, removal and retainers. It is often combined with whitening (during the final stages) and minor composite bonding (after removal) for an integrated cosmetic outcome, and those are quoted separately. 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo, subject to status.

Am I suitable for Six Month Smiles?

Dental

Suitable for patients with mild front-tooth concerns — minor crowding, small gaps, slight rotations, mild relapse from childhood braces. NOT suitable for significant bite correction, complex rotations, cases needing comprehensive orthodontic change, severe spacing closure, or skeletal jaw discrepancies. The honest assessment at consultation will tell you whether your case fits Six Month Smiles or needs comprehensive orthodontics.

How long does Six Month Smiles take?

Dental

Average treatment duration is 4-9 months. Simpler cases (mild crowding only on front teeth) can finish at 4-5 months. More involved cases (small gaps to close, mild rotations to correct) run 6-9 months. Treatment duration is shorter than comprehensive orthodontic systems because the system targets only the front teeth rather than aligning the full dentition.

Should I have Six Month Smiles or Invisalign?

Dental

It depends on the case. Six Month Smiles is focused on the front teeth most visible in a smile, typically over 4-9 months, and is quoted in writing after assessment. Invisalign Express (£2,200, one refinement) can address a broader area in a similar timeframe for suitable cases. For purely cosmetic front-tooth alignment, both can work; for mild correction that includes the bite or molars, Invisalign is often the better fit. We assess honestly at consultation rather than recommending one system by default.

What does Manchester MSc training add to ceramic-brace planning?

Dental

The MSc in Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry trains case planning with the long-term smile view — arch expansion preference, anti-ageing smile protocols, integration with future restorative work, retention planning. The orthodontic mechanics are similar to those any well-trained dentist would apply; the case selection and long-term planning are where MSc-level training informs better decisions.

What retainers come with ceramic braces?

Dental

Vivera clear retainers (similar to Invisalign retainers — removable, worn at night) are included with most ceramic-brace cases. For cases where there's a particular risk of relapse (significant rotations corrected, severe spacing closed), we sometimes also fit a fixed bonded retainer behind the front teeth as additional security. Either way, retention is essential for long-term result stability.

Do ceramic brackets stain?

Dental

The brackets themselves resist staining, but the elastic ligatures (the small bands holding the wire to the brackets) can pick up colour from food and drink — particularly curry, red wine, coffee and tea. Ligatures are replaced at each adjustment appointment (4-6 weeks) so any staining is short-lived. The brackets remain tooth-coloured throughout treatment.

How do I keep my teeth clean with ceramic braces?

Dental

Cleaning is more involved than with aligners. We provide specific home-care guidance: electric toothbrush with orthodontic head, interdental brushes (different sizes) for around brackets, water flosser for deeper cleaning, fluoride mouthwash. We also recommend more frequent hygiene appointments during ceramic-brace treatment (3-4 monthly rather than 6-monthly) to prevent decalcification around the brackets.

How much do ceramic braces cost?

Dental

Ceramic (tooth-coloured) fixed braces are offered in-house. The fee depends on the case and whether one or both arches are treated, and is quoted in writing after assessment. The quote sets out appliances, adjustment appointments, removal and retainers, so you know the full cost before you begin. 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo, subject to status.

How long does ceramic brace treatment take?

Dental

Most ceramic-brace cases at our clinic complete in 12-24 months. Simpler cases requiring less correction can finish in 9-12 months. Complex cases requiring full-arch alignment with significant bite correction may run 24 months. The exact timeline is established at the planning stage based on the specific orthodontic problem.

Are ceramic braces uncomfortable?

Dental

Most patients adapt to ceramic braces within 1-2 weeks. The brackets can initially irritate the cheeks and lips — orthodontic wax helps significantly. There's mild pressure for 24-48 hours after each adjustment appointment, which over-the-counter analgesia manages. Ceramic brackets are smoother than older metal ones and many patients find them more comfortable than expected based on metal-brace stories from childhood.

Are ceramic braces better than clear aligners?

Dental

Better for certain cases, worse for others. Ceramic braces handle severe rotations, significant spacing closure, and complex bite correction more predictably than clear aligners. Aligners are better for patient lifestyle (removable, easier eating and brushing), better aesthetics during treatment, and equally effective for most mild to moderate cases. The case selection depends on the specific orthodontic problem and the patient's priorities. We discuss both options at consultation.

Is Ayurvedic tongue reading evidence-based?

Whole Health

Partially. The basic clinical tongue examination is well-evidenced in conventional medicine and dentistry. The Ayurvedic constitutional reading is traditional knowledge with growing biomedical research support — particularly around the correlation between tongue presentation and gut microbiome states, systemic inflammation markers, and certain disease patterns. We're transparent about what's strongly evidenced versus where evidence is still emerging — you won't be misled.

Which vitamins support gum tissue repair?

Whole Health

Vitamin C is the most important — collagen synthesis requires it, and gum tissue is collagen-heavy. Vitamin D supports immune regulation and bone health (including the bone around teeth). Vitamin K2 directs calcium to bone rather than soft tissue. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation. Magnesium and zinc support tissue repair. Most patients we see are deficient or insufficient in at least two of these; correcting that is part of Nicoletta's standard protocol.

What foods are bad for my gums?

Whole Health

The biggest culprits are refined sugar (feeds pathogenic oral bacteria), ultra-processed foods (drive systemic inflammation), excess alcohol (alters oral and gut microbiomes), and a diet low in Omega-3 fats (reduces the body's natural anti-inflammatory capacity). Sticky carbohydrates that linger on the teeth are particularly problematic. The pattern matters more than any single food — episodic indulgence is fine; chronic high intake compounds over time.
