Is salon teeth whitening legal in the UK?

Dental

Peroxide tooth whitening at effective strengths may only be provided by, or under the prescription of, a registered dental professional, and only for adults. Salons offering peroxide whitening without a dentist are operating outside that framework. Products without peroxide are legal but generally produce modest, short-lived changes.

Do I need a check-up before teeth whitening?

Dental

Yes. Whitening should only start once a dentist has confirmed your teeth and gums are healthy, identified the type of staining and noted any crowns or fillings that will not lighten. For new patients this is a £65, 30-minute dental examination. A hygiene appointment beforehand is sometimes advised to remove surface stain.

Is in-chair or home whitening better?

Dental

Home whitening with custom trays usually gives the more stable, even result because it reaches deeper colour gradually and lets us manage sensitivity. In-chair whitening gives a quicker visible start but fades sooner on its own. For most patients we recommend combining the two, which is our £780 plan.

How much is teeth whitening in Islington?

Dental

At Dental & Wellness London on Essex Road, a single whitening method, in-chair or custom home trays, is £450, and the combined in-chair and home plan is £780. Internal whitening of a single root-treated tooth is £495. New patients have a £65 dental examination first, and 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo is available, subject to status.

Where is your clinic for root canal treatment?

Dental

We are at 222 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 3AP, about two minutes from Essex Road station and one stop from Highbury & Islington. The 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 buses stop nearby, Angel is 15–20 minutes' walk, and Dalston is about ten minutes by Lime or Forest e-bike.

How long does a root-treated tooth last?

Dental

A root-treated tooth that is well cleaned, sealed and protected with an onlay or crown can last for many years, often for life, though results vary. The quality of the final restoration matters as much as the root canal itself, which is why we plan the crown or onlay from the start and review the tooth on X-ray.

What happens if I leave an infected tooth?

Dental

An infected pulp does not heal on its own. The infection can spread into the bone around the root, causing an abscess, swelling and further damage, and the tooth may become impossible to save. If you have facial swelling that is spreading, difficulty swallowing or a fever, seek urgent medical care straight away.

Do you refer to a specialist endodontist?

Dental

We carry out most root canal treatments at our Islington clinic. Where a tooth has unusually complex anatomy, a blocked or heavily curved canal, or a failed previous treatment that needs specialist equipment, we refer to a specialist endodontist and explain why. We would rather refer than attempt something that is unlikely to succeed.

Can I be seen quickly with toothache?

Dental

Yes. A dental problem assessment (£75) is the quickest route in if you are in pain. We examine the tooth, take X-rays and, where root canal treatment is needed, can often start by relieving the pain at that visit or soon after. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment.

Does a root canal hurt?

Dental

The treatment is done under long-acting local anaesthetic, so most patients feel little more than during a filling. The severe pain people fear is usually the infection beforehand, which treatment relieves. Expect the tooth to feel tender when biting for a few days afterwards; ordinary painkillers and chewing on the other side usually help.

How much is a root canal in Islington?

Dental

At Dental & Wellness London on Essex Road, root canal treatment is £550–£950: from £550 for a front tooth and up to £950 for a complex molar, with premolars quoted in writing after assessment. Most back teeth then need an onlay (£850) or crown (£950, or up to £1,200 for Emax). 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo is available, subject to status.

Can I get a second opinion on a treatment plan?

Dental

Yes, and many patients come to us for exactly that. Bring any previous plan or X-rays if you have them. After a full 30-minute examination we will explain what we agree with, what we would do differently and what could safely wait. Sometimes the honest answer is that less treatment is needed than proposed.

Which areas do your patients come from?

Dental

Most patients live or work in Islington, Angel, Highbury, Canonbury, Stoke Newington, Hackney and Dalston. We are two minutes from Essex Road station and one stop from Highbury & Islington, with buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 on Essex Road. Angel is a 15–20 minute walk away.

What are your opening hours?

Dental

We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment only. We are closed at weekends and do not take walk-ins, which is how we keep appointments unhurried. Call 020 8127 4567 or WhatsApp +44 7974 910222 during opening hours. Out of hours, contact NHS 111 for urgent dental advice.

Are consultations free?

Dental

The 20-minute discovery call by phone is free, and orthodontic consultations, including Invisalign, are free with an iTero scan and ClinCheck. A dental examination is £65 for 30 minutes. Skin and aesthetic consultations are £65 and redeemable against treatment. We prefer to be clear about this before you book rather than after.

What is the difference between NHS and private dental care?

Dental

Both are held to the same clinical standards by the General Dental Council. The differences are time, choice and price. NHS care is charged in fixed bands with set materials and shorter appointments. Private care is charged per item, gives you more choice of materials and techniques, and usually allows longer, less hurried visits.

Do I need to be a registered patient to see an emergency dentist in Islington?

Dental

No. You do not need to be registered with us. Many of the people we see for urgent care are new patients who live or work near Angel, Highbury or Canonbury. Call 020 8127 4567 during clinic hours, Monday to Friday 8am–7pm (Tuesday from 9am), and we will triage by phone and offer the earliest appointment available that day.

Where is your implant clinic?

Dental

We are at 222 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 3AP, about two minutes from Essex Road station and one stop from Highbury & Islington. The 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 buses stop nearby, and Angel is 15–20 minutes' walk. Many patients cycle or use Lime and Forest e-bikes.

Are dental implants better than a bridge?

Dental

For a single gap between healthy teeth, an implant usually has the edge because it does not involve the neighbouring teeth and helps preserve bone. A bridge is quicker and avoids surgery, and is often sensible where the teeth either side already need crowns. We compare both in writing at consultation so you can decide with the full picture.

How long does the whole implant process take?

Dental

For a single implant, allow three to six months from placement to the final crown, because the bone needs time to integrate with the implant. Assessment and planning come first, and grafting or gum treatment can extend the timeline. The surgical appointment itself is usually around an hour, and the crown is fitted over one or two further visits.

Do I need a bone graft for a dental implant?

Dental

Not always. Grafting is needed when the bone is too thin or too shallow to hold an implant securely, which is more common where a tooth has been missing for years or in the upper back jaw near the sinus. Imaging at assessment shows whether it is needed. Where it is, it is quoted in writing after assessment.

Who places the implants?

Dental

All implants are assessed and placed by Dr Rishil Patel, our implant dentist, at our clinic at 222 Essex Road, Islington, N1 3AP. He holds a BDS (Hons) from King's College London, an MClinDent in Implantology and the MJDF, and is registered with the GDC under number 154292.

What is included in the single tooth implant price?

Dental

For a straightforward case, the figure from £2,200 includes the titanium implant, the abutment that connects it and the laboratory-made crown. It does not include preparatory work such as an extraction, gum treatment or bone grafting, which are quoted in writing after assessment. Every stage is itemised in your written quotation before you commit.

How much do dental implants cost in London?

Dental

At Dental & Wellness London, a single implant is from £2,200, including the implant, abutment and crown. Bone grafting, implant bridges and All-on-4 are quoted in writing after assessment. The implant consultation is £120, and 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo is available, subject to status.

Is an implant or a bridge better for one missing tooth?

Dental

It depends on the teeth either side. If they are healthy, an implant avoids cutting them down and helps preserve the bone. If they already need crowns, a bridge can be quicker and sensible. We explain both at consultation, with written quotations, so you can compare like with like before deciding.
