The myth this comparison is here to correct
Patients usually arrive expecting a winner — Zoom because it's "the professional one," or home trays because they're "gentler." Both framings are wrong, because they assume the two are rivals. They are two halves of how professional whitening works best, and for most people the honest answer is both, in the right order.
What each one actually is
Zoom is Philips' in-chair whitening system. Gums are isolated and protected, professional-strength gel applied, a lamp used over roughly an hour. Visible change the same day. The lamp does less than marketing suggests — the peroxide gel is what whitens; the real benefit is supervised, high-strength application in one sitting.
Home whitening, done properly, means custom trays scanned to fit your teeth, worn with a gentler gel over days or weeks. Not the same as a boil-and-bite kit — the custom fit is the whole point.

The six things that decide your result
Speed: Zoom wins outright — one session, same-day change.
Longevity: home trays win. Zoom alone relapses faster with no maintenance phase; trays leave you the means to top up.
Sensitivity: home trays win, usually comfortably. Zoom's high-strength gel is more likely to cause short-term "zingers."
Evenness and control: home trays edge it — a two-week course lets colour settle evenly and lets strength be adjusted.
Cost: home trays are better value standalone; Zoom alone costs more for a result that fades sooner.
The verdict: neither is "better" — Zoom wins speed, trays win longevity, comfort, control and value.
Why combined beats either alone
The combined protocol uses Zoom for the head-start, then trays for depth, evenness and maintenance — each stage covers the other's weakness. This is the gold-standard approach for most people wanting a result that genuinely lasts. Our combination whitening (in-chair session plus custom trays) is £780. Whitening is only provided after a dental examination (£65) confirms a fit, clean and healthy mouth; the examination is not included in the whitening price.

The part neither route fixes
Peroxide whitening only changes natural tooth structure — nothing to crowns, veneers, white fillings, or bonding, and nothing for a dead "dark" tooth, tetracycline banding, or white spots. If any of those is the real cause, neither route is the answer, and that gets said before you spend.
Frequently asked questions
Is Zoom whitening worth it? For a fast, supervised head-start before an event, yes. As a standalone it's less good value — it relapses faster and costs more. Its real worth shows paired with custom trays.
Does Zoom whiten more than home trays? Short term, yes. Over a full course, well-fitted trays reach the same or better shade — they just take longer and hold it longer.
Which causes more sensitivity? Zoom, due to higher strength and speed. Home trays with a desensitising gel are gentler. Our guide to sensitivity during whitening covers how to reduce it.
Can I just do Zoom and skip the trays? You can, but you'll likely be back sooner — without a maintenance phase, in-chair-only whitening relapses faster.
How long does each one last? Trays and the combined approach hold one to three years with top-ups; Zoom alone fades sooner.
