Choosing a private dentist in Islington is less about the word "private" and more about what it buys you: time in the chair, a dentist who knows your history, and prices you can see in writing before anything starts. If you have searched for a "private dentist Islington" option, you will find plenty of choice; Dental & Wellness London has been a private dental practice at 222 Essex Road, N1 since 2010. We do not offer NHS treatment, and this page sets out plainly what that means, what it costs, and when it may not be the right choice for you.

What a private dentist in Islington actually offers

A private practice works outside the NHS contract. That has practical consequences. Appointments are not paced to the NHS unit-of-activity system, so the dentist has the time to look properly. Our dental examination is a full 30 minutes with a complete risk assessment, and where a problem needs more time, we say so and book it rather than rushing it into the same visit.

Private care also means choice. You can discuss materials, techniques and laboratories with your dentist rather than accepting a fixed specification, and you can see treatment options side by side, from the most conservative to the most complete, with the honest trade-offs of each. Because the practice answers to its patients rather than to a commissioning body, the appointment book can flex around longer visits and planned sequences of care.

How private dental care works here

Every new patient relationship starts the same way: a conversation, then a thorough examination, then a written plan. We do not sell treatment at the first visit. The examination exists to understand your mouth, your history and your priorities. Treatment, if any is needed, follows only once you have had time to read the plan and ask questions.

Alongside general and cosmetic dentistry, the clinic brings skin, body and wellness care under one roof. You do not need any of it to be a dental patient here, but it is there if your dental concerns connect to stress, sleep, jaw tension or general wellbeing. That is the essence of our whole-health approach to dentistry.

Who private dental care suits, and who it may not

Private dentistry suits people who value continuity, time and choice, and who want to understand their options rather than simply be told what will happen. It tends to suit:

  • Adults who have moved to Islington and want a dentist they can stay with for years.
  • Patients who feel they have been rushed or pressured elsewhere and would like a careful second opinion.
  • People who are anxious in the chair and need longer, calmer appointments.
  • Patients considering cosmetic or restorative work who want to see every option, including doing nothing.
  • Busy professionals who need early or evening appointments, Monday to Friday until 7pm.

It may not suit everyone. If your needs are routine and you have reliable access to an NHS dentist, that may be the sensible answer, and we will say so. We cannot offer NHS treatment, weekend appointments or walk-ins, and we would rather you knew that before you book.

Private, NHS or a corporate chain: your options compared

  • NHS dentistry is subsidised and charged in fixed bands. Clinical standards are regulated in the same way, but appointment times and material choices are constrained, and access in central London can be limited.
  • Corporate private groups offer private fees and wide opening hours, but dentists often move between sites, and continuity can be harder to keep.
  • An independent, clinician-owned private practice such as ours offers longer appointments, the same clinical lead over many years and itemised written pricing. The trade-off is that fees are private and we are open on weekdays only.

If you are weighing this up, our honest guide to private dentist vs NHS goes into more detail.

Your first visit, step by step

  1. A free discovery call. A 20-minute phone conversation about what brings you in and whether we are the right fit. No obligation.
  2. Your dental examination. Thirty minutes, £65, covering teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, an oral cancer check and a full risk assessment. X-rays are taken only when clinically justified and are quoted first. Read more on our dental check-up page.
  3. A written plan. If treatment is advisable, you receive a written plan with itemised prices and the alternatives, including what happens if you wait.
  4. Hygiene, if needed. A 30-minute hygiene appointment, which can often be arranged around your examination. See our hygienist in Islington.
  5. Treatment and review. Any treatment is booked at a pace that suits you, followed by a recall interval set to your own risk rather than a fixed calendar.

The examination also includes an intra-oral iTero scan and photographs, giving a full picture before any treatment is proposed. There are no hidden fees, no compulsory add-ons and no day-of-treatment upsells.

Results, longevity and aftercare

The results of good private dentistry are mostly quiet: fewer surprises, smaller repairs caught early, and restorations that last because they were planned properly. Longevity depends on three things we can influence together: the quality of the original work, your daily home care, and regular reviews that catch wear, cracks or gum changes before they become expensive.

Aftercare is part of the plan, not an afterthought. After treatment you receive written instructions, a named point of contact and a review appointment where appropriate. Between visits, our team can answer questions by phone or WhatsApp during opening hours. Results vary from person to person, and we will always tell you what is realistic for your mouth rather than what is most appealing to hear.

Risks, and how we reduce them

The main risks in private dentistry are not clinical so much as commercial: over-treatment, unclear pricing and rushed decisions. We reduce them in specific ways:

  • Over-treatment. We present conservative options first and regularly recommend monitoring rather than intervention.
  • Cost surprises. Every plan is itemised in writing before treatment starts. Where a price depends on what we find, it is quoted in writing after assessment.
  • Missed problems. A full 30-minute examination, gum assessment and oral cancer check at every examination, with X-rays where your risk justifies them.
  • Pressure. Nothing is booked in the chair under pressure. You can take the plan away and come back when ready.

If something does not go as expected, our complaints procedure is published and straightforward.

Why patients choose Dental & Wellness London

The practice is led by Dr Vishal Patel: BDS (Liverpool), MSc Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry (Manchester), GDC 103127, AACD member, and an Invisalign Diamond II provider. Over around 20 years in dentistry he has treated over 15,000 cases. Implant care is led by Dr Rishil Patel, BDS (Hons) King's College London, MClinDent in Implantology, MJDF, GDC 154292.

Beyond dentistry, our wider team includes Dr Reena Sohal for Ayurvedic consultations, Nicoletta Peloni for nutritional therapy, Laura-Maria Schober for somatic coaching and mindfulness, and Binta Patel for life and relationship coaching. Wellness care supports, and never replaces, your GP. The practice is rated 4.7 stars from more than 300 Google reviews.

How to judge a dentist in Islington: what 300+ Google reviews tell you, and what they do not

Dental & Wellness London is rated 4.7 stars from more than 300 Google reviews, collected since the practice opened on Essex Road in 2010. We do not curate the profile; patients write what they write, and we respond to feedback, positive or otherwise. You can read a selection on our reviews page or on Google directly.

Across those reviews, three themes recur. Patients mention time: appointments that do not feel rushed and explanations that make sense. They mention honest scope: being told when treatment is not needed. And they mention continuity: the same clinical lead from one visit to the next.

Reviews do have limits. They reflect how people felt, not whether a filling was well placed or a gum problem was spotted early. That is why reviews are best read alongside credentials and the way a practice explains its care.

How to choose a private dental clinic in London

A few questions separate one private dental clinic from another more reliably than a website or a price list.

  1. Who will treat me? Check the dentist's GDC registration and qualifications, and whether you will see the same person each time.
  2. Will I get a written plan? Itemised, staged and costed before treatment starts, with options including the option to do nothing.
  3. How long are appointments? A thorough examination is not a ten-minute visit.
  4. What happens with complications? Ask how follow-ups, adjustments and complaints are handled. Our complaint procedure is published.
  5. What do patients say? Read reviews over several years rather than a handful of recent ones. We are rated 4.7 from more than 300 Google reviews; see our patient reviews.
  6. Does the clinic say no? A clinic that recommends everything you ask about is not necessarily serving you well.

Questions people ask about private dentists in Islington

Is a private dentist in Islington worth it?

For many people, yes, mainly because of time and continuity. A private examination here lasts 30 minutes, you see the same clinical lead over years, and every plan is priced in writing. If your needs are simple and you can access an NHS dentist easily, that may serve you just as well.

How much is a private dental check-up in Islington?

Our dental examination costs £65 and lasts 30 minutes, including a full risk assessment and oral cancer check. A children's examination is £45, and under-5s are seen free with a parent's examination. X-rays are taken only when clinically justified, and we always quote for them before they are taken.

Can I register with a private dentist without a waiting list?

Yes. Private practices do not hold NHS-style registration lists, so you simply book an examination. New-patient appointments are usually available within a short time, Monday to Friday between 8am and 7pm (Tuesday from 9am). Call 020 8127 4567 or message us on WhatsApp, and we will find a time that suits you.

Do you see dental emergencies?

We see existing and new patients with urgent problems during opening hours, Monday to Friday, through a £75 dental problem assessment. We are not a walk-in practice, so please call first. Out of hours, contact NHS 111, or go to A&E for severe swelling or trauma. See our emergency dentist page.

Is there a private dentist near Angel?

We are on Essex Road, a 15–20 minute walk from Angel or a short ride on the 38, 56, 73 or 341 bus. Many patients who live or work around Angel and Upper Street use us because longer appointments and evening times up to 7pm fit around their working day.

Is there a private dentist near Moorgate or Liverpool Street?

Yes, and the journey is shorter than most people expect. Essex Road station is two stops from Moorgate on the Great Northern line, about eight minutes, so patients who work in the City, around Liverpool Street, Old Street and the Barbican, come to us before work, at lunchtime or on the way home. We open from 8am and run until 7pm on weekdays, and a 30-minute examination fits inside a long lunch. Prices are the same as for everyone else and are given in writing.

Do you treat families and children?

Yes. We see children from their first visit, and under-5s are examined free when a parent has their own examination. A children's examination is otherwise £45. Many families book back-to-back appointments. Find out more about our Islington dental clinic and how we approach younger patients.

What should I look for in a dentist?

Look for a registered dentist who examines thoroughly, explains findings in plain language and offers options rather than a single answer. Itemised written pricing, sensible recall intervals and a willingness to say treatment is not needed are good signs. Pressure to book on the day, or vague costs, are reasons to pause.

Are dental reviews on Google reliable?

They are a useful guide, especially in large numbers over several years, because a single unusual experience carries less weight. Reviews describe how patients felt rather than clinical quality, so read them alongside the clinician's qualifications and the practice's approach to pricing, consent and aftercare.

Can I see a private dentist for one treatment only?

Yes. Many patients come to us for one piece of work, such as aligners, veneers or an implant. We will still check that the teeth and gums are healthy before starting, because treatment built on untreated decay or gum disease is unlikely to last. If you have a recent examination elsewhere, bring the X-rays and notes.

I’m based in Dalston and was super self-conscious about my slightly twisted teeth. Looked at clear aligners vs Invisalign at different places but Dental & Wellness London’s expertise won me over. Questions
people ask

If your question isn't answered here, call reception on 020 8127 4567 or email reception.

How much does a private dentist cost in Islington?

At Dental & Wellness London a dental examination is £65 for 30 minutes, including a full risk assessment. Hygiene is £85, or £135 for Diamond hygiene with air polish. Treatment such as composite bonding starts at £175. Every plan is itemised in writing before work begins, and 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo is available, subject to status.

Is Dental & Wellness London an NHS dentist?

No. We are a private practice and do not provide NHS treatment. That allows longer appointments, a choice of materials and continuity with the same clinical lead. If you are eligible for and can access NHS care, it may suit routine needs well, and we are always happy to explain the difference honestly.

What is the difference between NHS and private dental care?

Both are held to the same clinical standards by the General Dental Council. The differences are time, choice and price. NHS care is charged in fixed bands with set materials and shorter appointments. Private care is charged per item, gives you more choice of materials and techniques, and usually allows longer, less hurried visits.

Are consultations free?

The 20-minute discovery call by phone is free, and orthodontic consultations, including Invisalign, are free with an iTero scan and ClinCheck. A dental examination is £65 for 30 minutes. Skin and aesthetic consultations are £65 and redeemable against treatment. We prefer to be clear about this before you book rather than after.

What are your opening hours?

We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment only. We are closed at weekends and do not take walk-ins, which is how we keep appointments unhurried. Call 020 8127 4567 or WhatsApp +44 7974 910222 during opening hours. Out of hours, contact NHS 111 for urgent dental advice.

Which areas do your patients come from?

Most patients live or work in Islington, Angel, Highbury, Canonbury, Stoke Newington, Hackney and Dalston. We are two minutes from Essex Road station and one stop from Highbury & Islington, with buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 on Essex Road. Angel is a 15–20 minute walk away.

Can I get a second opinion on a treatment plan?

Yes, and many patients come to us for exactly that. Bring any previous plan or X-rays if you have them. After a full 30-minute examination we will explain what we agree with, what we would do differently and what could safely wait. Sometimes the honest answer is that less treatment is needed than proposed.

Do you claim to be the best dentist in Islington?

No. There is no official ranking of dentists, and we think patients are better served by evidence than by claims. We publish our rating, our clinicians' qualifications and our prices so that you can compare practices fairly. The best dentist for you depends on what you need, whether that is time, a specific treatment or continuity.

Who will I see at my appointment?

General and cosmetic dentistry is led by Dr Vishal Patel, BDS, MSc Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry, GDC 103127. Implant assessments and surgery are carried out by Dr Rishil Patel, MClinDent Implantology, GDC 154292. Our hygiene team provides 30-minute hygiene appointments. We aim for continuity, so you see familiar faces from one visit to the next.

What happens if I am unhappy with my care?

Please tell us directly; most concerns are resolved quickly through a conversation. We have a published complaints procedure, and we respond to feedback, including on Google. If you remain unhappy, the procedure explains the independent routes available to you. We would always rather hear about a problem than have it left unresolved.

Can I pay for private dental treatment in instalments?

Yes. We offer 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo, subject to status, for larger treatment such as Invisalign, implants and veneers. Your treatment is quoted in writing first, so you know the full cost before deciding whether to spread it. Routine examinations and hygiene visits are paid on the day.

Is the clinic accessible?

Yes. The clinic is on the ground floor and is wheelchair accessible. If you have particular needs, such as extra time, a carer attending or anxiety about dental treatment, let us know when you book and we will plan the appointment around them. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment only.

Do you see patients from outside Islington?

Yes. Many patients travel from across north London, including Highbury, Hackney, Stoke Newington and the City, and some come further for orthodontic and cosmetic treatment. We are at 222 Essex Road, N1 3AP, two minutes from Essex Road station, with buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 stopping nearby.
