A clinician-owned private practice on Essex Road since 2009, with unhurried appointments, written prices and the same clinical lead from one visit to the next.
A private dentist in Islington at Dental & Wellness London means a 30-minute examination (£65) with Dr Vishal Patel, BDS, MSc, GDC 103127, at 222 Essex Road, N1. We offer general, cosmetic and implant dentistry, with every plan itemised in writing before treatment. The practice is private only, open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment.

Choosing a private dentist in Islington is less about the word "private" and more about what it buys you: time in the chair, a dentist who knows your history, and prices you can see in writing before anything starts. If you have searched for a "private dentist Islington" option, you will find plenty of choice; Dental & Wellness London has been a private dental practice at 222 Essex Road, N1 since 2009. We do not offer NHS treatment, and this page sets out plainly what that means, what it costs, and when it may not be the right choice for you.
A private practice works outside the NHS contract. That has practical consequences. Appointments are not paced to the NHS unit-of-activity system, so the dentist has the time to look properly. Our dental examination is a full 30 minutes with a complete risk assessment, and where a problem needs more time, we say so and book it rather than rushing it into the same visit.
Private care also means choice. You can discuss materials, techniques and laboratories with your dentist rather than accepting a fixed specification, and you can see treatment options side by side, from the most conservative to the most complete, with the honest trade-offs of each. Because the practice answers to its patients rather than to a commissioning body, the appointment book can flex around longer visits and planned sequences of care.
Every new patient relationship starts the same way: a conversation, then a thorough examination, then a written plan. We do not sell treatment at the first visit. The examination exists to understand your mouth, your history and your priorities. Treatment, if any is needed, follows only once you have had time to read the plan and ask questions.
Alongside general and cosmetic dentistry, the clinic brings skin, body and wellness care under one roof. You do not need any of it to be a dental patient here, but it is there if your dental concerns connect to stress, sleep, jaw tension or general wellbeing. That is the essence of our whole-health approach to dentistry.
Private dentistry suits people who value continuity, time and choice, and who want to understand their options rather than simply be told what will happen. It tends to suit:
It may not suit everyone. If your needs are routine and you have reliable access to an NHS dentist, that may be the sensible answer, and we will say so. We cannot offer NHS treatment, weekend appointments or walk-ins, and we would rather you knew that before you book.
If you are weighing this up, our honest guide to private dentist vs NHS goes into more detail.
The results of good private dentistry are mostly quiet: fewer surprises, smaller repairs caught early, and restorations that last because they were planned properly. Longevity depends on three things we can influence together: the quality of the original work, your daily home care, and regular reviews that catch wear, cracks or gum changes before they become expensive.
Aftercare is part of the plan, not an afterthought. After treatment you receive written instructions, a named point of contact and a review appointment where appropriate. Between visits, our team can answer questions by phone or WhatsApp during opening hours. Results vary from person to person, and we will always tell you what is realistic for your mouth rather than what is most appealing to hear.
The main risks in private dentistry are not clinical so much as commercial: over-treatment, unclear pricing and rushed decisions. We reduce them in specific ways:
If something does not go as expected, our complaints procedure is published and straightforward.
Private fees in London vary widely, so we publish ours. These are the current prices at Dental & Wellness London:
Skin and aesthetic consultations are £65, redeemable against treatment. For larger plans we offer 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo, subject to status.
The practice is led by Dr Vishal Patel: BDS (Liverpool), MSc Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry (Manchester), GDC 103127, AACD member, and an Invisalign Diamond II provider, in the top 1% of UK Invisalign providers. Over around 20 years in dentistry he has treated over 15,000 cases. Implant care is led by Dr Rishil Patel, BDS (Hons) King's College London, MClinDent in Implantology, MJDF, GDC 154292.
Beyond dentistry, our wider team includes Dr Reena Sohal for Ayurvedic consultations, Nicoletta Peloni for nutritional therapy, Laura-Maria Schober for somatic coaching and mindfulness, and Binta Patel for life and relationship coaching. Wellness care supports, and never replaces, your GP. The practice is rated 4.7 stars from more than 300 Google reviews; you can read what patients say on our patient reviews page.
For many people, yes, mainly because of time and continuity. A private examination here lasts 30 minutes, you see the same clinical lead over years, and every plan is priced in writing. If your needs are simple and you can access an NHS dentist easily, that may serve you just as well.
Our dental examination costs £65 and lasts 30 minutes, including a full risk assessment and oral cancer check. A children's examination is £45, and under-5s are seen free with a parent's examination. X-rays are taken only when clinically justified, and we always quote for them before they are taken.
Yes. Private practices do not hold NHS-style registration lists, so you simply book an examination. New-patient appointments are usually available within a short time, Monday to Friday between 8am and 7pm (Tuesday from 9am). Call 020 8127 4567 or message us on WhatsApp, and we will find a time that suits you.
We see existing and new patients with urgent problems during opening hours, Monday to Friday, through a £75 dental problem assessment. We are not a walk-in practice, so please call first. Out of hours, contact NHS 111, or go to A&E for severe swelling or trauma. See our emergency dentist page.
We are on Essex Road, a 15–20 minute walk from Angel or a short ride on the 38, 56, 73 or 341 bus. Many patients who live or work around Angel and Upper Street use us because longer appointments and evening times up to 7pm fit around their working day.
Yes. We see children from their first visit, and under-5s are examined free when a parent has their own examination. A children's examination is otherwise £45. Many families book back-to-back appointments. Our family dentist page explains how we approach younger patients.
We are at 222 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 3AP, on the stretch of Essex Road between Islington Green and Canonbury. Essex Road station (Great Northern) is two minutes' walk away, and Highbury & Islington is one stop north on the same line, or about 15 minutes on foot. Buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 stop on Essex Road close to the door. From Angel the walk is 15–20 minutes, or a short ride on the 38, 56, 73 or 341. Many patients come by bike: Lime and Forest e-bikes are easy to pick up nearby, and Dalston is about 10 minutes away by bike. If you are coming from nearby, see our pages for Angel, Highbury and Canonbury. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment only; there are no walk-ins and we are closed at weekends.
"Private" does not mean expensive-for-the-sake-of-it — none of this means private is right for every patient, and where the NHS pathway is accessible and appropriate, that may be the better answer.

No. We are a private practice and do not provide NHS treatment. That allows longer appointments, a choice of materials and continuity with the same clinical lead. If you are eligible for and can access NHS care, it may suit routine needs well, and we are always happy to explain the difference honestly.
Both are held to the same clinical standards by the General Dental Council. The differences are time, choice and price. NHS care is charged in fixed bands with set materials and shorter appointments. Private care is charged per item, gives you more choice of materials and techniques, and usually allows longer, less hurried visits.
The 20-minute discovery call by phone is free, and orthodontic consultations, including Invisalign, are free with an iTero scan and ClinCheck. A dental examination is £65 for 30 minutes. Skin and aesthetic consultations are £65 and redeemable against treatment. We prefer to be clear about this before you book rather than after.
We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment only. We are closed at weekends and do not take walk-ins, which is how we keep appointments unhurried. Call 020 8127 4567 or WhatsApp +44 7974 910222 during opening hours. Out of hours, contact NHS 111 for urgent dental advice.
Most patients live or work in Islington, Angel, Highbury, Canonbury, Stoke Newington, Hackney and Dalston. We are two minutes from Essex Road station and one stop from Highbury & Islington, with buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 on Essex Road. Angel is a 15–20 minute walk away.
Yes, and many patients come to us for exactly that. Bring any previous plan or X-rays if you have them. After a full 30-minute examination we will explain what we agree with, what we would do differently and what could safely wait. Sometimes the honest answer is that less treatment is needed than proposed.
