Cosmetic dentist Islington: what we actually do

A cosmetic dentist in Islington, or anywhere else, is a general dentist who has gone on to focus on how teeth look as well as how they work. At Dental & Wellness London, cosmetic dentistry is not a separate menu of procedures. It is a way of planning: we look at the colour, shape, position and proportion of your teeth, how they sit within your lips and face, and how healthy the gums and bite are, before deciding what, if anything, to change.

The umbrella covers five families of treatment. The right starting point is to identify which one, or which combination, fits the change you want, rather than picking whatever a clinic happens to specialise in.

  • Teeth whitening lightens the natural colour of enamel and dentine using dentist-supervised peroxide gel.
  • Composite bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to existing teeth to repair chips, close small gaps and refine edges.
  • Veneers, in composite or porcelain, cover the front surface of teeth when both shape and colour need to change.
  • Orthodontics, usually Invisalign clear aligners for adults, moves teeth into a better position.
  • Gum contouring reshapes an uneven or excessive gum line, often alongside the treatments above.

Our approach to cosmetic dentistry in N1: the smile fits the face

Three principles shape almost every plan we write.

Conservative first

We choose the option that removes the least healthy tooth structure. Whitening and bonding add or change colour without cutting teeth down; porcelain veneers and crowns usually require some enamel to be removed, which cannot be put back. That does not make porcelain wrong, but it should be chosen for a reason.

Orthodontic-first thinking

Many cosmetic concerns, such as a tooth that looks too narrow, too prominent or slightly darker, are really problems of position. Moving a tooth into the right place with aligners is often cheaper and more conservative than building it up or covering it to disguise where it sits. This is the principle we see skipped most often elsewhere, and it is why orthodontic consultations, including Invisalign, are free at our practice.

Smile design with the whole face in view

Smile design in Islington, as we practise it, means looking at lip line, facial proportions, skin tone and how much tooth shows when you speak and smile. Dr Vishal Patel is also trained in facial aesthetics and is the clinic's sole aesthetic prescriber, so the conversation can include the soft tissues around the smile where that is genuinely relevant, for example in a gummy smile, where the cause may be the teeth, the gums or the lip.

Who cosmetic dentistry suits, and who it does not

It tends to suit people who

  • have healthy teeth and gums, or are willing to put that right first;
  • are bothered by something specific: colour, a chip, a gap, a crooked tooth, uneven edges or worn teeth;
  • want a result that looks like their own teeth on a good day rather than a uniform, bright white set;
  • are happy to maintain their result with regular hygiene and sensible habits.

We are more cautious when

  • there is untreated decay or gum disease. Cosmetic work placed on unhealthy foundations does not last, so we treat those first, often starting with a hygienist appointment in Islington;
  • someone grinds or clenches heavily, which affects material choice and longevity;
  • the request is for a very large change to otherwise healthy teeth, especially extensive porcelain work, where a smaller plan might achieve most of the improvement;
  • expectations are fixed on a particular photograph. We will show you what is realistic for your teeth, and sometimes that means advising against treatment.

Cosmetic dental options compared

  • Whitening is the least invasive way to change colour. It does not change shape, and it does not lighten existing fillings, crowns or veneers. See teeth whitening in Islington.
  • Composite bonding is quick, usually completed in one visit, and repairable. It suits chips, small gaps and edges, and commonly lasts five to seven years with care. See composite bonding in Islington.
  • Composite veneers cover more of the tooth and can change shape and colour together, at lower cost than porcelain but with more maintenance. See composite veneers.
  • Porcelain veneers, including Emax, are more stain-resistant and generally longer-lasting, but involve some enamel preparation. See veneers and porcelain veneers.
  • Invisalign corrects position rather than disguising it, and is often the first stage of a cosmetic plan. See Invisalign in Islington.
  • Crowns and onlays are restorative rather than purely cosmetic, used where a tooth is heavily filled or weakened. See dental crowns in Islington.

When several of these are combined into a planned sequence, it is usually called a smile makeover. The common sequence is: health first, then alignment, then whitening, then bonding or veneers to finish.

The cosmetic dentistry process, step by step

  1. Discovery call (free, 20 minutes, by phone). A short conversation about what you would like to change, so we can advise whether a consultation is worthwhile.
  2. Consultation (£65). Clinical examination, photographs, bite and gum assessment, and an honest discussion of the options, including the ones that mean doing less. For orthodontic cases the consultation is free and includes an iTero scan and ClinCheck plan.
  3. Written plan and quote. You receive a written plan setting out the sequence, the number of visits and the cost of each stage. There is no pressure to proceed on the day.
  4. Foundations. Any decay, gum inflammation or hygiene work is completed first.
  5. Treatment in sequence. Alignment, then whitening, then restorative finishing. Larger veneer or bonding cases may begin with a mock-up so you can preview the shape.
  6. Review and maintenance. We check the bite and the result after treatment, and agree a maintenance rhythm.

Results, longevity and aftercare

No cosmetic treatment is permanent, and results vary between people. As a general guide, whitening fades gradually and can be topped up with your custom trays; composite bonding commonly lasts five to seven years before refurbishment; porcelain veneers often last considerably longer with good care; and orthodontic results depend on wearing retainers as advised.

Aftercare follows the same themes whatever the treatment: keep your gums healthy, see the hygienist regularly (appointments are 30 minutes, £85, or £135 for Diamond hygiene with air polish), protect restorations from grinding with a night-time appliance where needed, and limit strongly staining food and drink.

Risks, and how we reduce them

  • Sensitivity after whitening is common and usually temporary. We manage it by adjusting gel strength and wear time; our guide to sensitive teeth explains more.
  • Chipping or staining of composite is reduced by careful bite analysis, a high polish and maintenance.
  • Irreversible loss of enamel is the main long-term risk of porcelain work. We reduce it by choosing additive options where they will do the job, and by preparing teeth minimally when porcelain is the right answer.
  • Over-treatment, a smile that looks too bright, too large or too uniform, is avoided by planning with the face in view and showing you a preview first.
  • Gum problems around restorations are reduced by good margins and regular hygiene.

Why choose Dr Vishal Patel as your cosmetic dentist

Dr Vishal Patel qualified at Liverpool (BDS) and holds an MSc in Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry from Manchester. He is registered with the General Dental Council (GDC 103127), is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and is an Invisalign Diamond II provider, in the top 1% of UK Invisalign providers. He has around twenty years in dentistry, over 15,000 cases, and ten years in facial aesthetics.

That combination is unusual. It means the same clinician can judge whether a concern is best addressed by moving teeth, changing their colour or shape, or by looking at the soft tissues around them, and can say plainly when the best plan is a smaller one. Dental & Wellness London has been on Essex Road since 2009 and is rated 4.7 from more than 300 Google reviews. You can also browse our before and after gallery.

Cosmetic dentistry questions we are asked in Islington

What is the difference between a cosmetic dentist and a general dentist?

In the UK there is no separate specialist register for cosmetic dentistry. A cosmetic dentist is a registered dentist who has undertaken further training and experience in aesthetic treatment. Dr Vishal Patel holds an MSc in Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry and is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, alongside around twenty years of general practice.

What is the most popular cosmetic dental treatment?

Teeth whitening is the most common starting point, followed closely by composite bonding. Both are conservative, relatively affordable and quick. For many patients, a combination of whitening and a small amount of bonding achieves most of what they hoped for, without the need for veneers. Alignment with Invisalign is often the first stage when teeth are crooked.

Is cosmetic dentistry worth it?

It can be, when it is planned conservatively and for the right reasons. The best outcomes tend to come from treatment that looks like your own teeth, preserves enamel and is easy to maintain. The least satisfying outcomes usually come from doing too much too quickly. An honest consultation should include the option of doing less, or nothing.

Can a cosmetic dentist fix a gummy smile?

Sometimes. A gummy smile can be caused by excess gum tissue, short teeth, tooth position or an active upper lip, and each needs a different approach. Options include gum contouring, orthodontics and, in some cases, anti-wrinkle treatment for the lip. We identify the cause first. Gum contouring is from £195, carried out with a surgical technique for accuracy.

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

Well-planned veneers do not ruin teeth, but porcelain veneers usually involve removing some enamel, which is irreversible. That is why we consider whitening, bonding, composite veneers and alignment first. Where porcelain is the right answer, we keep preparation minimal. Composite veneers are more conservative but need more maintenance over time.

How do I choose a cosmetic dentist in Islington?

Check the dentist's GDC registration, postgraduate training in aesthetic dentistry, and a body of their own before-and-after work. Ask whether they will offer more conservative options, whether they consider orthodontics before veneers, and whether prices are published and confirmed in writing. Reviews from local patients over several years are also a useful guide.

Dentist-Led Aesthetic Integration
The smile fits the face
Composite bonding — adding tooth-coloured resin to existing teeth to change shape, length, or colour — is the workhorse of contemporary aesthetic dentistry: the most accessible and most reversible cosmetic option.
Moving a tooth into the right position with Invisalign is almost always cheaper and more conservative than building a tooth up to compensate for the position it is in — a principle most cosmetic dental practices skip.
The same dentist who works on your smile is also a trained aesthetic injector — lip flip, dermal filler, anti-wrinkle. Gum contouring and gummy-smile correction sit at exactly this boundary between dentistry and aesthetic medicine.
Used where composite cannot reach the result, or where longevity matters more than cost, porcelain veneers are the honest step up — case selection is what separates excellent veneer work from work that gets reversed five years later.
Whitening is often the only treatment needed — an in-chair or at-home finishing step, and the most common starting point for a cosmetic enquiry.
Start with a free 20-minute discovery call, then a consultation (£65; orthodontic consultations are free). We identify which treatment family — or combination — actually fits the change you want, including the honest option to do less.

The right starting point at consultation is to identify which treatment family actually fits the change you want — not to pick the one the clinic in front of you happens to specialise in.

Questions
people ask

If your question isn't answered here, call reception on 020 8127 4567 or email reception.

How much does a cosmetic dentist cost in Islington?

It depends on the treatment. At Dental & Wellness London, composite bonding is £175 or £350 per tooth, whitening £450 or £780, porcelain veneers £750 to £1,500 per tooth, and Invisalign from £2,200. The consultation is £65, and 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo is available, subject to status.

Is the first cosmetic consultation free?

We offer a free 20-minute discovery call by phone. The cosmetic consultation itself is £65. Orthodontic consultations, including Invisalign, are free and include an iTero scan and ClinCheck plan, so if straightening is part of your plan that stage costs nothing to explore.

Should I straighten my teeth before veneers or bonding?

Often, yes. If teeth are crowded or rotated, veneers or bonding have to be built thicker to disguise their position. Straightening first with clear aligners usually means less tooth is prepared, less material is needed and the result looks more natural. Dr Vishal Patel is an Invisalign Diamond II provider and will discuss this at consultation.

What is smile design?

Smile design is the planning stage of cosmetic dentistry. We assess tooth shape, proportion, colour and position against your lips, face and the way you speak and smile, then plan the most conservative sequence of treatment to achieve the change. Larger cases may include a mock-up so you can preview the proposed shape before committing.

How long does cosmetic dental treatment take?

Whitening takes around two weeks with home trays, and bonding is usually completed in one visit. Porcelain veneers typically need two or three appointments over a few weeks. Where alignment comes first, Invisalign can take from a few months to over a year depending on the case. Your written plan sets out the expected timeline.

Do you offer cosmetic dentistry on the NHS?

No. Dental & Wellness London is a private practice and does not provide NHS treatment. Purely cosmetic treatment such as whitening, bonding for appearance and veneers is generally not available on the NHS in any case. Our fees are published and confirmed in writing before treatment, with 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo available, subject to status.

Where is your cosmetic dentist in Islington?
