Parents, teenagers and children seen by the same dentist, with appointments long enough for questions, and honest referral when a child needs a specialist.
Family dentistry at Dental & Wellness London in Islington means children, teenagers and adults cared for under one roof by Dr Vishal Patel and our team. A children's examination costs £45, under-fives are seen free alongside a parent's £65 examination, and hygiene appointments are 30 minutes at £85. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm, with back-to-back family appointments available.

The family dentist Islington households rely on should be able to see you, your partner, your children and, where needed, your parents, and to know each of you well enough to notice small changes from one visit to the next. That kind of continuity is harder to find than it should be. Many private clinics focus narrowly on cosmetic work, while busy general practices struggle to give a nervous six-year-old, or a parent with questions, enough time.
We have organised Dental & Wellness London to do both. We are a private practice on Essex Road, open since 2009, with the clinical depth to handle complex adult dentistry and the patience to make a child's first check-up feel ordinary. Where a child needs a paediatric specialist, we say so and refer without hesitation. If you are comparing practices, our guide to choosing the best dentist in Islington sets out what to look for.

Family dentistry is general dentistry organised around the household rather than the individual. In practice it means:
We see children for routine care from their first teeth onwards. Under-fives are seen free alongside a parent's examination, which is often the gentlest introduction: the child watches a parent in the chair, then sits for a short look of their own. From five, a children's examination is £45.
A children's examination looks at the teeth, gums and soft tissues, checks the developing bite and identifies any early decay. We give practical, age-appropriate advice on brushing, diet and drinks. Where a child's risk of decay is higher, we discuss preventive measures such as fluoride varnish and fissure sealants on permanent molars, and quote any treatment in writing before it is carried out.
Some children and many teenagers, particularly during orthodontic treatment, benefit from professional cleaning. Hygiene appointments at our clinic are 30 minutes and gentle, with explanation at every step. See our hygienist in Islington page for more.
Where decay is straightforward, we restore the tooth with a tooth-coloured filling, taking time to keep the child comfortable. The fee is quoted in writing after assessment.
Around the ages of seven to nine we look closely at how the jaws and bite are developing. Some children benefit from an early orthodontic conversation; many simply need monitoring. We also look for signs of mouth breathing and discuss it with parents, because breathing patterns can influence how the face and jaws develop. Our airway dentistry page explains this further. Where a child may have a medical issue such as enlarged tonsils or adenoids, we recommend a GP review.
For children and teenagers who play contact sports, a custom sports mouthguard fits far better than a boil-and-bite guard. The fee is quoted in writing after assessment.
We are a general family practice, not a specialist paediatric clinic. We refer to a paediatric dentist or hospital service when a child:
Out of hours, for urgent problems in children or adults, NHS 111 is the right first call. During our opening hours, see our emergency dentist in Islington page.
The teenage years bring their own questions: crowding as adult teeth come through, wisdom teeth, sport, and the effect of diet and fizzy drinks on enamel. Orthodontic consultations at our clinic are free, including an iTero digital scan and a ClinCheck plan, so a family can see what treatment would involve before making any decision.
Dr Vishal Patel is an Invisalign Diamond II provider, in the top 1% of UK Invisalign providers. Invisalign fees follow the same ladder for teenagers and adults: Express £2,200, Moderate £3,400 and Unlimited £4,500–£4,900. Our orthodontist in Islington page and our guide to Invisalign for teens explain the options, including when fixed braces may suit better.
Adult family members receive the full range of general and restorative dentistry: a 30-minute examination with a full risk assessment (£65), hygiene, gum care, fillings, crowns, root canal treatment and tooth replacement, with dental implants assessed and placed by our implant dentist, Dr Rishil Patel. For grandparents, we pay particular attention to gum health, dry mouth from medicines, worn teeth and the fit of any dentures. Because we see the family together, we often notice patterns, in diet, grinding or gum health, that run through a household.
Results vary between individuals, and even excellent home care benefits from regular professional review.
Routine family dentistry is low risk, but a poor early experience can shape how a child feels about the dentist for years. We reduce that risk by explaining everything in simple language, using "tell, show, do", keeping first visits short and never rushing. Treatment is planned to be minimally invasive, X-rays are taken only when justified, and any local anaesthetic is given gently. If a child is not ready, we stop and try again another day.
We are a private practice and do not provide NHS treatment. Other treatment is quoted in writing after assessment, and 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo, subject to status, is available for larger plans. A routine adult check-up is described in more detail on our dental examination page.
The practice is led by Dr Vishal Patel, BDS (Liverpool) and MSc in Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry (Manchester), GDC 103127, with around 20 years in dentistry and over 15,000 cases behind him. He is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and an Invisalign Diamond II provider. The clinic is rated 4.7 stars from over 300 Google reviews; you can read what patients say on our reviews page. Beyond dentistry, our wellness team, including nutritional therapy and coaching, is available to adults who want support alongside, not instead of, their GP's care. For an overview of private care at the clinic, see our private dentist in Islington page.
As soon as the first teeth appear, and certainly by their first birthday. Early visits are short and relaxed, and they help children become used to the dental chair before anything needs doing. At our clinic, under-fives are seen free alongside a parent's examination, which makes these early visits simple to fit in.
A children's examination at Dental & Wellness London is £45. Children under five are seen free when they come with a parent who is having their own £65 examination. As a private practice we do not offer NHS treatment, and any further care is quoted in writing before it begins.
It depends on the child. UK guidance recommends recall intervals for under-18s of between three and twelve months, based on risk of decay and gum problems. Children with healthy teeth and good habits may need fewer visits; those with early decay or orthodontic treatment benefit from more frequent review. We recommend an interval for each child.
Yes. Reception can arrange back-to-back appointments so that parents and children are seen in one visit, Monday to Friday between 8am and 7pm. Many families book early-morning or late-afternoon slots around school and work. We do not offer walk-in appointments, so it is best to call ahead.
Yes. We keep first visits short, explain each step in simple language and let children hold the mirror or sit on a parent's lap. Seeing a parent treated first often helps. If a child is very anxious or needs treatment under sedation, we refer to a specialist paediatric service.
Dental & Wellness London is at 222 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 3AP. Essex Road station is two minutes' walk, and Highbury & Islington is one stop by train. Many private clinics have specialised so narrowly that they can no longer accommodate the routine appointment a six-year-old needs — we have organised the practice to keep both possible.

For many families the value lies in time and continuity: longer appointments, the same dentist where possible, and a practice that can see the whole household together. NHS dentistry is free for under-18s, and we will always be clear about that. Our role is to make prevention thorough and visits calm, so that later treatment is rarely needed.
