Porcelain veneers typically last ten to fifteen years, but the realistic range runs from five to more than twenty-five. At Dental & Wellness London, longevity is decided by five variables: the quality of the original bond, your bite and grinding habits, the ceramic chosen, gum stability, and maintenance. Most are set before fitting.
The number everyone quotes — and why it misleads
"Ten to fifteen years" is a reasonable average, but it hides veneers that failed at five years alongside veneers still serving at twenty-five. Longevity is less a property of the porcelain than of the planning. For lifespan by veneer type, see how long veneers can last.
The five variables that decide your number
1. The bond. Bonds to enamel are strong and stable for decades; bonds to dentine are measurably weaker. Conservative preparation matters — removing too much enamel chasing a "perfect" fit quietly trades years off the veneer's life.
2. The bite. Porcelain is strong under compression, unforgiving under shear and flex. Grinding and clenching kill veneers early, not chewing. If you grind, a Davies hard occlusal splint (£495) is modest insurance for expensive porcelain.
3. The ceramic. Conventional feldspathic porcelain delivers refined optics; Emax carries roughly four times the flexural strength. Standard porcelain runs £750–£1,050/tooth; Emax £1,050–£1,500. A stronger ceramic matched to a heavier bite often costs less over its life.
4. The gums. Gum recession exposing the veneer's edge is a more common failure than fracture. Untreated gum disease shortens the plan's clock — foundations are treated first.
5. The maintenance. Hygienist visits, a non-abrasive paste, and the night guard if prescribed — worn, not in a drawer. A well-made veneer in a managed bite shouldn't need routine "refresh" replacement.
What ageing well actually looks like
Faces change around veneers over time — lips thin, smiles age. Veneers designed with a long-term smile view account for this rather than freezing today's photograph.

FAQs
How long do porcelain veneers really last? Published averages cluster around 10-15 years; well-planned cases regularly exceed 20.
What usually fails first? In grinders: chipping or debonding. In everyone else: gum recession or marginal staining.
Do veneers ruin your natural teeth? Conservative preparation removes a fraction of a millimetre and shouldn't compromise the tooth; over-preparation does.
When veneers wear out, what happens? The old one is removed and a new one made at the same per-tooth cost band.
Is composite bonding a longer- or shorter-lived alternative? Shorter per cycle (5-8 years) but repairable and preserves more enamel.
Can I whiten veneers later? No — porcelain doesn't respond to whitening; natural teeth are whitened before veneer shade is chosen.
