Why lip position matters for smile aesthetics
A smile is the relationship between teeth, lips, gums, and facial structure. How much gum shows when you smile depends on your bone anatomy, lip length at rest, and how much your upper lip lifts when you smile. Lip flip works on that third factor — the muscle lift.
Where lip flip works well
Mild gummy smile (1-3mm gum show) caused by hyperactive lip lift, smile asymmetry where one side lifts higher, post-orthodontic refinement, or general smile integration after cosmetic dentistry.
Where lip flip doesn't work
Significant gummy smile (4mm+) from skeletal vertical excess — the bone anatomy is the issue, not the lip. Short clinical crowns need gum surgery, not lip flip. Severe lip incompetence would be made worse.

The combined approach for smile cases
The consultation covers bite assessment, tooth proportions, gum tissue, and lip relationship together. Many patients who arrive expecting lip flip leave with a recommendation for Invisalign first, or bonding, with lip flip as the final refinement.
Sequencing combined treatments
Orthodontics first, cosmetic dentistry second, lip flip last — refining the new smile architecture once tooth and gum positions are final.
