What a lip flip actually does — and what it does not
A lip flip is a small, anatomically-precise injection of muscle-relaxing treatment into the upper lip muscle — specifically the orbicularis oris where it attaches near the vermilion border. The injection slightly relaxes the muscle's pull, allowing the upper lip to roll outward and show more of the pink vermilion when you smile or speak. Our lip flip treatment in Islington page sets out dosing, aftercare and suitability in more detail.
A lip flip does not add volume to your lips. It does not change lip shape structurally. It does not look like lip filler. What it does is alter the resting position of the upper lip by a millimetre or two so more of the natural lip is visible.
Most patients arrive at consultation having seen Instagram videos where a lip flip appears to produce results closer to lip filler. Those visuals are almost always misleading — filter effects, lighting and angle, or the patient having had filler alongside the flip without saying so. The realistic flip result is subtle, and that's the point. If subtle is what you want, lip flip is right. If volume is what you want, lip filler is the answer — and we'll say so at consultation rather than under-deliver with a flip.
Realistic before-and-after expectations
The honest visual, described without identifiable patient photographs per GDC patient-confidentiality standards:

At rest, before treatment: the upper lip sits in its natural position with a certain amount of vermilion visible. In patients with a "thin" upper lip, only a sliver of pink lip shows.
At rest, two to three weeks after treatment: the upper lip sits very slightly rolled outward. Looking straight at the patient at rest, most observers wouldn't notice anything had been done. Side-by-side, vermilion show is fractionally fuller.
On smiling, before treatment: in patients with a "gummy" smile or high-pulling upper lip, the vermilion can disappear behind the teeth.

On smiling, two to three weeks after treatment: the vermilion stays visible during the smile because the muscle is relaxed enough not to pull the lip up and back. The smile looks softer.
Small change, soft change, change an observer who didn't know wouldn't notice — that's the realistic before-and-after. Anything dramatic is either filter, filler, or fiction.
The timeline — week by week
Day 1: no visible effect. Mild redness at injection points settles within hours.
Days 2-4: still no visible effect — the product is binding but hasn't started relaxing the muscle.
Days 5-7: first hints of effect — the upper lip may feel slightly less mobile when speaking.

Days 7-14: the effect builds steadily; by day 10 most patients see a difference in the mirror.
Weeks 2-3: peak effect — your "after" appearance.
Weeks 4-8: the effect holds steadily.
Weeks 8-12: the muscle gradually returns to normal activity; most patients return for refresh treatment around this point.
If you need a result by a specific date — a wedding, an event — book at least three weeks ahead.
How long does lip flip last?
Most patients: 8 to 12 weeks — shorter than the 3-4 months typical for forehead or frown-line anti-wrinkle treatment, because the muscle around the mouth is one of the most-used muscles in the body and metabolises the product faster.
Factors affecting longevity: the specific product used, dose, individual metabolism, injection depth and placement, and facial muscle activity level. Most patients who want sustained effect refresh treatment at approximately the 10-week mark; we don't recommend more frequent refresh, as over-treatment can subtly affect speech and smile mechanics.
Why a dentist for lip flip?
A dentist has spent two decades working in close anatomical proximity to the upper lip — the orbicularis oris muscle, the levator labii superioris, the labial artery branches, the lip mucosa are the working anatomy of clinical dentistry. Oral surgery experience informing implant placement and cosmetic restorative work near the upper lip is the same anatomical surface a lip flip injection acts on.
Beyond safety, the planning advantage matters: a lip flip changes the relationship between the upper lip and upper teeth at rest and on smiling. A patient who's had cosmetic dental work finishes the smile with the lip frame around it; planning the lip flip in the context of the smile architecture is work the dentist-injector does naturally.

What affects how your before-and-after looks
Your baseline upper lip anatomy. Patients with a longer, flatter upper lip see less dramatic visible change than patients with a naturally more mobile upper lip.
The dose and placement. Lip flip is a micro-dose treatment — typically 2 to 4 units across 3 to 5 injection points. Higher doses don't produce better outcomes; they produce a frozen-feeling upper lip with affected speech and smile mechanics.
Your individual muscle reactivity. Some patients respond strongly, some mildly — we adjust dose at the second treatment if needed.
Your facial expression habits. Strong expression patterns metabolise the product faster — a longevity factor more than aesthetic.
Realistic expectations going in. Patients expecting a filler result are disappointed by a flip; patients expecting a subtle softening are usually satisfied.
When lip flip will not deliver the result you want
You want visible volume. Lip flip doesn't add volume — lip filler does.
You want a dramatic transformation. Lip flip is subtle by design; dramatic visuals online are usually filler-with-flip, filters, or fiction.
You want a fully "frozen" upper lip. Over-treating affects speech mechanics — we won't push dose into that territory.
You have structural lip asymmetry. This usually needs filler or a surgical conversation, not a flip.
You're pregnant or breastfeeding. We don't perform aesthetic POM injection during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

FAQs
How soon will I see my before-and-after?
First effects at days 5-7, peak at 2-3 weeks. Book at least 3 weeks ahead of any event.
Why don't you show patient before-and-afters?
Per GDC patient-confidentiality standards we don't display identifiable patient photographs in marketing. We describe outcomes in words and discuss them using anatomical illustrations at consultation.
Why does my result look subtle compared to Instagram?
Because Instagram visuals are usually unrepresentative — lip filler results labelled as flips, filters, lighting changes. Your honest lip flip result is subtle by design.
Will my lip flip look natural?
When proportionately dosed and conservatively planned, yes — natural softening of the smile, not a visibly "treated" appearance.
How long does lip flip last?
8 to 12 weeks for most patients, with refresh appointments around the 10-week mark.
Can I combine lip flip with lip filler?
Yes — a common pairing. We assess at consultation whether one, both, or neither is right for your goals.
Is lip flip painful?
Most describe it as 3-4 out of 10, with topical anaesthetic reducing the sensation.
Can lip flip fix a gummy smile?
Sometimes, depending on the cause. Where overactive upper-lip muscle is the cause it can help; where excess gum tissue or a skeletal pattern is the cause, it's the wrong answer.
