The retention rule orthodontics historically got wrong
For decades, retention guidance was time-limited. Modern thinking, backed by long-term follow-up evidence, has moved to lifetime nightly retainer wear. It applies to every Invisalign case we treat.
The DWL retention protocol
First 3 months: Vivera full-time. Months 3-12: transition to nightly wear. Year 1 onwards: nightly indefinitely. Replacement every 3-5 years; retainers are quoted in writing with your treatment plan.

Bonded wire retainers
For higher-relapse-risk cases (crowding, gaps, deep bite), a thin wire bonded to the inside of front teeth provides 24/7 retention, invisible from outside, quoted in writing with your treatment plan.
What happens without retention
First 6 months: minor shifting begins. Year 1-2: substantial relapse possible. Year 5+: relapse often approaches pre-treatment position.
Retention is part of the treatment, not an optional add-on — we're explicit about this commitment before treatment begins. Our article on long-term functional outcomes with Invisalign looks at how results hold over the years.
