The tooth-body connection, explained

A patient walked into my chair in 2019 with recurring gum inflammation that returned within weeks of every hygiene appointment, and a thick white tongue coating no mouthwash had touched in years. Her GP said her bloods were fine; her hygienist said her home care was excellent. Both were doing competent work. Neither was asking how the two situations were connected.

The tooth-body connection: dentist showing a patient a tooth diagram in the treatment room

The four connections that change what dentistry can do

The jaw and the nervous system

Chronic nocturnal clenching is not a dental habit — it's the nervous system using the jaw as an outlet. A custom night guard protects the teeth but doesn't address why the clenching is happening. Splint plus somatic body-mind work with Laura-Maria Schober consistently resolves cases that splint alone leaves unchanged.

The mouth and the gut

The oral microbiome sits upstream of the gut microbiome — every swallow carries some of what colonises the mouth into the digestive tract. Patients with persistent gingival inflammation that returns despite good hygiene are often presenting an oral manifestation of a systemic problem. Nicoletta Peloni's nutritional protocols address what the hygienist appointments cannot reach.

The smile and the self

A patient who has avoided smiling in photographs for decades is not just hiding teeth — they're managing something about identity. Cosmetic dentistry produces a different mouth; patients who do parallel body-image work alongside it report a deeper, more durable change.

Sleep and the airway

The lower jaw is a load-bearing structure in the airway. Snoring is soft-tissue vibration; sleep apnoea is repeated airway collapse — a medical diagnosis, not a dental one. We fit anti-snoring appliances but refer to sleep medicine where apnoea is suspected.

What integrative practice actually looks like

The team at 222 Essex Road includes Dr Vishal Patel, Dr Reena Sohal (Ayurvedic practitioner), Nicoletta Peloni (nutritional therapist), Laura-Maria Schober (body-psychodynamic coach) and Binta Patel (life coach). Most patients see only one or two of these across treatment — the integration is offered when clinically relevant, never as a default.

How to know if integrative care is what your case needs

For most patients, the answer is no — and we'll say so. The signal is usually: TMJ or bruxism that hasn't responded to a night guard, recurring gum inflammation despite good hygiene, persistent oral symptoms without clear cause, or a cosmetic concern with a deeper thread the patient names themselves.
