Dentistry that asks about stress, sleep, diet and general health, practised alongside nutritional therapy and coaching under one roof since 2009.
Holistic dentistry at Dental & Wellness London in Islington means dental care that considers the whole person: stress, sleep, diet, medication and general health, as well as teeth and gums. Dr Vishal Patel leads the dental side, with nutritional therapy and coaching in the same building. It starts with a 30-minute dental examination at £65, followed by a written plan with fees.

Holistic dentistry is dental care that treats the mouth as part of the whole person. It asks about stress, sleep, diet, medication and general health, because each of these can show up in the teeth, gums and jaw, and it looks for causes as well as repairs. At its best it is simply thorough, evidence-based dentistry with the questions widened. At its worst the word is a label with nothing behind it, sometimes attached to claims about disease that the evidence does not support.
We tend to describe what we do as integrative rather than holistic, because the word has been stretched thin. For us it means something structural: dentistry practised alongside nutritional therapy, coaching and Ayurvedic consultations in the same building since 2009, with practitioners able to talk to one another about the same patient, with consent. If your interest is mainly in materials and technique, such as metal-free fillings and amalgam, that is covered on our biological dentistry page.
Three principles sit at the heart of good whole-person dental care. None of them requires belief; all of them are supported by mainstream evidence.
The NHS recognises that gum disease is associated with other conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. An association is not the same as a cause, and we are careful not to overstate it. The relationship with diabetes is the best studied: poorly controlled blood sugar makes gum disease more likely, and there is some evidence that treating gum disease can modestly help blood sugar control. That is a good reason to take bleeding gums seriously; see our page on gum disease and bleeding gums.
Other links are more practical. Teeth grinding and clenching are commonly associated with stress and disturbed sleep. Many medicines cause a dry mouth, which raises the risk of decay. Acid reflux and frequent acidic drinks erode enamel. A holistic examination looks for these patterns and, where something lies outside dentistry, refers you to the right person, most often your GP.
What holistic dentistry is not: a treatment for systemic disease. We do not claim that dental work causes or cures conditions elsewhere in the body, and we would advise caution towards any clinic that does.
The difference between a holistic philosophy and an integrative clinic is whether the other disciplines are actually there. At Dental & Wellness London they are.
Wellness services support, and never replace, your GP's care. Referrals happen down a corridor rather than across a city, and only with your agreement.
Patients usually come to us through one of four routes, depending on what they need.
It suits people who want their dentist to ask more questions; who have recurring problems, such as repeated decay, bleeding gums or grinding, that ordinary repair has not resolved; who feel anxious about dental care and want a slower, more explained approach; and those who value having several disciplines under one roof.
It does not suit anyone looking for dental treatment as an alternative to medical care, or hoping that changes to their teeth will resolve a chronic illness. It is also not a reason to delay urgent treatment: infection and pain are dealt with first.
Whole-person care tends to show its value over years rather than at a single appointment: fewer repeat fillings, steadier gums and less wear from grinding. Results vary, and much depends on what happens between visits. Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between the teeth, limiting sugary and acidic snacks, and keeping regular hygiene appointments remain the foundation. Our hygienist in Islington sees patients for thirty-minute appointments.
The main risk in holistic dentistry is not a procedure but a philosophy taken too far: delaying necessary treatment, or attributing symptoms to the teeth when they need medical investigation. We reduce that risk by following mainstream clinical guidance, referring to your GP when something lies outside dentistry, and never presenting wellness services as treatment for disease. Clinical risks of any individual procedure are explained in writing before you agree to it.
Our fees are set out openly:

A holistic dentist examines your teeth and gums in the usual way, then widens the questions: stress, sleep, diet, medication and general health. The aim is to understand why problems occur, not only to repair them. A good one still follows mainstream evidence. Our guide what is a holistic dentist explains more.
Its sensible core is: prevention, conservative treatment and attention to general health are all mainstream good practice. Claims that dental work cures chronic disease are not supported by evidence. Holistic dentistry is not a recognised specialty, so check that any holistic dentist is GDC-registered and ask what they actually do.
A slower pace, clear explanation and time to ask questions help many anxious patients. We also offer coaching and mindfulness support in the same building for those who want it. Our article on holistic dental care for anxious patients describes how we approach this.
We are at 222 Essex Road, Islington, N1 3AP, two minutes from Essex Road station and easily reached from Angel, Highbury, Canonbury and Hackney. We have practised integrative dentistry here since 2009, alongside nutritional therapy, coaching and Ayurvedic consultations, and are rated 4.7 from over 300 Google reviews.
Ask whether they are GDC-registered, what their approach involves in practice, how they work with other health professionals, and what evidence supports their recommendations. Be cautious of anyone promising to cure illness through dental work. Our guide to questions to ask a holistic dentist covers this in detail.
Dental care here is led by Dr Vishal Patel, BDS (Liverpool), MSc Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry (Manchester), GDC 103127, an AACD member and Invisalign Diamond II provider with around twenty years in dentistry and over 15,000 cases. He founded the clinic in 2009 on the idea that dentistry and wellbeing belong in the same conversation.
That idea is set out more fully on our whole-health dentistry page. What you can expect in practice is an unhurried examination, honest explanation, fees in writing, and a team who can help with the parts of the picture that lie beyond the teeth.
Dental & Wellness London is at 222 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 3AP, on the ground floor with step-free access. Essex Road station is two minutes' walk away, and Highbury & Islington is one stop by train. Buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 stop on Essex Road. From Angel it is a 15–20 minute walk, and Canonbury Square is about 10 minutes on foot; see our directions from Canonbury. Many patients cycle or use Lime and Forest e-bikes; from Dalston it is about 10 minutes by bike. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm, by appointment.
We do not claim dental work treats or causes systemic disease — the integrative model means credentialed practitioners collaborating on the same patient, not a philosophy printed on the wall.

Holistic dentistry is dental care that treats the mouth as part of the whole person, considering stress, sleep, diet, medication and general health alongside teeth and gums. Its sensible core is prevention and conservative, explained treatment. At Dental & Wellness London in Islington we practise it as integrative dentistry, with nutritional therapy and coaching in the same building.
The core of it is. Prevention, minimally invasive treatment and attention to links such as gum disease and diabetes are mainstream practice. Claims that dental work cures chronic illness are not supported by good evidence. We follow NHS and professional guidance and do not claim that dental treatment causes or cures systemic disease.
At our Islington clinic a 30-minute dental examination with full risk assessment is £65, a 30-minute hygiene appointment is £85, and Diamond hygiene with air polish is £135. Periodontal treatment is £255. A 20-minute discovery call by phone is free, and 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo is available, subject to status.
The NHS does not offer holistic dentistry as a distinct service, although NHS dentists do provide preventive advice. Dental & Wellness London is a private practice and does not provide NHS treatment. Our dental examination is £65 for 30 minutes and includes a conversation about your general health, sleep and stress.
The terms overlap. Holistic dentistry focuses on the whole person: stress, sleep, nutrition and general health. Biological dentistry focuses on materials and technique, such as metal-free fillings and careful amalgam removal. Many clinics, including ours, offer both. Neither is a recognised specialty, so check that your dentist is GDC-registered.
Yes, often. Grinding is commonly linked to stress and disturbed sleep, so we combine a protective appliance, such as a Davies splint at £495, with attention to habits and stress. Somatic coaching and mindfulness are available in the same Islington building for patients who want that support alongside their dental care.
We are at 222 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 3AP, two minutes from Essex Road station and one stop from Highbury & Islington. Buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 stop nearby, and Angel is a 15–20 minute walk. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment.
