Root canal treatment, step by step

1. Assessment and diagnosis. If you are in pain, a dental problem assessment (£75) is the quickest way in; routine patients may be diagnosed at their 30-minute dental examination (£65). We take X-rays, test the nerve and confirm that root canal treatment is the right answer.
2. Anaesthesia and isolation. The tooth is numbed with long-acting local anaesthetic, and a rubber dam is placed to keep the tooth dry and free of saliva.
3. Access and cleaning. A small opening is made, and the canals are located under magnification, then cleaned and shaped with rotary nickel-titanium instruments.
4. Disinfection. The canal system is irrigated thoroughly. If a second visit is needed, a medicated dressing and temporary filling are placed in between.
5. Sealing. The canals are filled and sealed, and the tooth is closed with a filling.
6. Final restoration. Back teeth are usually protected with an onlay or crown, ideally within about four weeks, because a root-treated tooth is more brittle and can fracture if left unprotected.
