“Botox” in Islington: what it is and how treatment works

What people mean by the brand name

“Botox” is the best-known brand name for botulinum toxin, a prescription-only medicine used to relax specific muscles. Many people use the word for any anti-wrinkle treatment, in the same way that some brand names become shorthand for a whole category. When patients in Islington ask us about “Botox”, they are usually asking about softening frown lines, forehead lines or crow’s feet, and occasionally about clenching or a square jaw.

At our clinic we call it anti-wrinkle treatment, and the product is chosen as a prescription decision at consultation, not from a menu. Several licensed botulinum toxin products are available to UK prescribers. They belong to the same family of medicine but come from different manufacturers, and they differ slightly in how they are measured and prepared. Which one suits you is a clinical judgement, so you will not see us lead with a brand name. This page explains what the word refers to and how regular treatment works in practice. Why clinics do not advertise it by name

In the UK, prescription-only medicines cannot be promoted to the public. That is why responsible clinics describe the treatment rather than advertise the product, and why you may find the word “Botox” only in quotation marks on our pages. It is also why there is no such thing as buying it off a price list: a prescriber has to see you, assess you and decide that treatment is appropriate before any medicine can be prescribed for you by name.

This is a useful safeguard rather than an inconvenience. If a provider offers treatment without a face-to-face assessment by a prescriber, or treats you without asking about your health and medicines, that tells you something about the standard of care.

How the medicine works

Muscles move when a nerve releases a chemical messenger at the point where nerve meets muscle. Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks that release in the small area where it is placed. The muscle receives a weaker signal, contracts less, and the skin above it stops creasing as deeply. Over the following months the nerve forms new connections and the muscle gradually returns to full strength, which is why the effect is temporary and fades slowly rather than switching off.

Because the effect is local, precise placement and dose are everything. A few units in the right place soften a line. The same amount a little too low on the forehead can make the brow feel heavy. This is why we describe skill in this treatment as anatomical rather than cosmetic.

The same family of medicine is also used in hospital and specialist medicine for a range of muscle and nerve conditions, and for excessive sweating. That long medical history is part of why so much is known about how it behaves. In a dental and aesthetic setting, its uses are narrower: expression lines in the upper face, small areas around the mouth, and the jaw muscles in people who clench or grind. How treatment works in Islington

Your first visit is a skin and aesthetic consultation, £65 and redeemable in full against treatment. Dr Patel assesses your face at rest and in movement, takes your medical history and talks through what you would like to change. If treatment is appropriate, you receive a written plan and can go ahead when you are ready. At the two-week review we check the result and make small adjustments if needed.

Common myths about anti-wrinkle treatment

• “It always looks frozen.” A frozen look comes from over-treatment or a one-size pattern of injection, not from the medicine. Proportionate dosing aims for softened lines with natural expression.
• “It is a toxin, so it must be dangerous.” The medicine is used in tiny, measured doses and has been studied for decades in both medical and aesthetic use. Like any medicine it has side effects and people who should not have it, which is why a prescriber assesses you first.
• “Once you start, you can never stop.” If you stop, the muscles simply return to how they were. Lines do not become worse because you had treatment.
• “It fills wrinkles.” It relaxes muscles. It does not add volume or improve skin texture. Those concerns need different treatments, such as dermal fillers or Profhilo.
• “Anyone can give it.” In the UK it must be prescribed by a qualified prescriber after assessing you in person. At our clinic one clinician both prescribes and administers it.

Regular treatment, close to home

Because results last three to four months, many patients come back three or four times a year. Being close to home or work makes that easier, and seeing the same clinician each time means your treatment is adjusted to how your face responds.

That continuity matters more than people expect. Each visit is recorded: the areas treated, the dose, how your muscles responded and what we changed at review. Over a year or two that record lets us refine treatment, sometimes using less in areas that have settled and spacing appointments further apart. It is also the reason we see you at two weeks, so we learn from each treatment rather than repeating it by rote.

Practically, a 15 minute treatment fits into a lunch break or the start or end of a working day. We open Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm (Tuesday from 9am), by appointment, so many patients from Islington, Highbury and Canonbury book before work or on the way home. There are no walk-ins, which means your slot is kept for you and the appointment is unhurried.

When to plan around events

Because the effect builds over two weeks, first treatments are best booked at least four to six weeks before a wedding, holiday or other important date. That leaves time for the result to settle and for any adjustment at review. Once we know how your face responds, timing can be closer, but we would not treat in the same week as a major event.

Questions worth asking any clinic

Whether you come to us or go elsewhere, a few questions tell you a great deal about how “Botox” is approached:

• Who prescribes the medicine, and will that person see me face to face before treatment?
• Who will actually treat me, and will it be the same person at my review?
• Is there a review at two weeks, and is any adjustment included in the price?
• Will you tell me if treatment is not right for me, or if something else would help more?
• What happens if I have a concern in the days afterwards, and who do I speak to?

Clear, specific answers to these are a better guide than the lowest price or the soonest appointment.

Who prescribes and treats you

Treatment is prescribed and administered by Dr Vishal Patel, BDS, MSc Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry, GDC 103127, the clinic’s sole aesthetic prescriber. He has around twenty years in dentistry and ten in facial aesthetics, and is trained through the International Fellowship in Advanced Aesthetic Science and a facial anatomy and cadaver course with Dr Ali Pirayesh at the University of Amsterdam. Safety and suitability

Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with some neuromuscular conditions. We also check for infection at the treatment area, medicines that affect nerve and muscle function, allergies and recent treatment elsewhere. Small bruises, mild redness or a brief headache can occur, and less often temporary heaviness or unevenness, which we review. Results vary, and we will tell you honestly if treatment is not the right choice for you.

Getting to the clinic

The clinic is at 222 Essex Road, Islington, London N1 3AP, two minutes from Essex Road station and a short ride from Angel, Highbury, Canonbury, Hackney and Stoke Newington. Essex Road station is on the Great Northern line, one stop from Highbury & Islington, and buses 38, 56, 73, 341 and 476 run along Essex Road. Angel is a 15 to 20 minute walk and Canonbury Square about 10 minutes. Many patients cycle or use a Lime or Forest e-bike; Dalston is around 10 minutes by bike.
