The composite bonding process — what actually happens, stage by stage

The composite bonding process places tooth-coloured resin directly onto the tooth in a single visit — usually with no drilling and no injections. A dentist assesses the smile, matches the shade, prepares the surface, then layers, sculpts, and polishes the resin by hand. Each tooth takes thirty to ninety minutes. The skill of the layering and polish decides the result.

The myth: that bonding is "just glue and go"

Bonding is the most operator-dependent treatment in cosmetic dentistry. A veneer is made in a lab; bonding is made in the chair, by hand, in real time. Two patients can buy the same treatment at the same price and get results that age completely differently.

The seven-stage process

1. Assessment — checking the teeth at rest and in animation, grinding habits, gum health, and whether the real issue is alignment rather than shape.

2. Shade matching — done before the tooth dries out, often two or three shades layered per tooth for natural depth.

3. Surface preparation — in most cases no drilling and no injections; enamel is cleaned and lightly conditioned, staying intact underneath.

4. Etch and bond — the invisible stage that decides longevity; rushed or contaminated bonding is why some work stains or debonds early.

5. Layering the resin — freehand, built in increments cured under blue light, closer to sculpture than filling.

6. Sculpting and bite check — contours refined and the bite checked carefully; resin left even fractionally high fails early.

7. High polish — the most underrated stage; a properly polished surface resists coffee and wine staining far better.

How long it takes

Edge bonding on one tooth: 30-45 minutes. Full-coverage tooth: 60-90 minutes. Upper front six: usually one longer visit, finished the same day.

What it costs

Per-tooth pricing: £175 for simple work, rising to £350 for complex full-coverage work — never more for bonding. See composite bonding cost in London for a fuller breakdown. Separate: a dental examination (£65), Davies splint if you grind (£495), hygiene (£85). Finance: 0% APR finance over 12 months via Tabeo, subject to status.

When the process changes

Active grinding adds a night splint to the plan. Inflamed gums are treated first. Misaligned or crooked teeth may need moving first rather than disguising with added resin bulk.

What happens afterwards

No recovery time; our composite bonding aftercare guide covers day-to-day care. Composite typically serves five to seven years before a refresh, with a polish every 12-18 months.

FAQs

How does composite bonding work? Enamel is conditioned, bonding agent applied, resin built in layers, sculpted, and polished — all in one visit.

Does it hurt? For most patients, no — no drilling or injections in most cases.

How long does it take? 30-45 minutes for edge bonding; 60-90 for full-coverage.

Is the tooth shaved down? No — bonding is additive, which is why it's reversible in most cases.

Why do results vary between clinics? Because bonding is made by hand in real time — the seven stages aren't performed equally everywhere.

Can it be done in one appointment? Yes, from shade matching to final polish.
