Acne scarring isn't one problem. Different scar types — box-car, rolling, ice-pick, hypertrophic — require different treatment modalities. The matched protocol is most of the work.

Types of acne scar

  • Rolling and boxcar scars: shallow to moderate depressions; respond well to microneedling (from £160), sometimes with PRP (£250).
  • Ice-pick scars: deep, narrow scars; often need targeted scar treatment (from £225) alongside resurfacing.
  • Uneven texture: laser resurfacing (from £195).
  • Red or brown marks: not true scars; they often fade with time, peels and SPF; for persistent marks, see pigmentation.

Can acne scars be 100% removed?

Rarely. Most people see a clear improvement over a course of treatment, but scars are improved rather than erased. Active acne should be controlled first; see acne.

What is the best treatment for acne scars in the UK?

Usually a combination matched to your scar types, over several months. Microneedling suits most skin types, including darker skin. The NHS rarely funds cosmetic scar treatment. For surface-level skin care, see our comparison of HydraFacial vs microdermabrasion.

Substantial improvement is realistic for most scar types; complete removal is rare. Honest framing: some scars improve dramatically, some only partially, some are difficult to change much. Combined-modality plans matched to scar profile produce the best outcomes.

What is the best treatment for acne scars in the UK?

Usually a combination matched to your scar types, such as microneedling, PRP, scar reduction and laser resurfacing.

How much does it cost to get acne scars treated?

At Dental & Wellness London, microneedling is from £160, PRP £250, scar reduction from £225 and laser resurfacing from £195 per session.

Does the NHS offer treatment for acne scarring?

Rarely; scar treatment is usually considered cosmetic. Your GP can advise.
