Pigmentation isn't a single problem — sun damage, melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation, freckles. Each responds to different modality. The matched protocol is most of the work.

Types of pigmentation

  • Sun spots and age spots: flat brown marks from sun exposure.
  • Freckles: small spots that darken in summer.
  • Post-inflammatory pigmentation: marks left after spots, eczema or injury.
  • Melasma: hormonally driven patches, which need a different, cautious plan; see melasma. Our page on melasma and laser explains why.

What is the best treatment for pigmentation in the UK?

The best treatment depends on the type of pigment and your skin type. Sun spots respond well to Q-switched laser or IPL. Post-inflammatory marks often respond better to gentle peels and skincare. Daily SPF 50 matters more than any single treatment. Any new or changing mole or patch should be checked by your GP first. To choose between light-based options, see IPL vs BBL.

How much does pigmentation treatment cost?

At our clinic, pigmentation removal is from £80 per session, an IPL photofacial £180, and skin peels from £160. Most people need a short course. Our IPL aftercare guidance explains what to do between sessions.
